short description
They are all there skeleton shape bamboo cane hat which is worn by the Apatanis tribe men from Arunachal Pradesh. This particular hat is mainly functional and also unique in that it has been designed to cover the face of the wearer from direct harsh sunlight. The hat signifies the skill and understanding of the environment that the Apatani demonstrate, particularly with regard to their agriculture. The hat has a frontal covering with dried leaves fastened over a bamboo net-like frame, along with an open bamboo structural ventilation-convenience system.
The design of the hat is raw and skeletal, composed of a rough and undefined bamboo framework that is the embodiment of the tribe's minimalist and yet practical use of materials. These hats are for use primarily when working in fields much needed in protecting the person working from the sun in laborious tasks of farming and in working within the fields. General opening creates provision in the headspace for fit secured and comfortable wearing. Apart from that, the hat also has a particular kind of base meant to act as a chin rest, making it more comfortable during prolonged use while doing strenuous physical work.
The hats might differ a little from one clan to another, or from one society of Apatani to another, but they generally look the same. This commonness in their design is, of course, an expression of the common cultural identity of the Apatani people. It also emphasizes the agricultural way of life of these people. The bamboo cane hat forms an extra level of functionality and combines that with cultural memory-backwards thinking, transforming something that protects into something very much more-an emblem of the tribe's clever resourcefulness and resilience.
