description
The Hora, a traditional basket used by various hill tribes in India to carry objects, a basket that is made of bamboo, cane, or any other locally available material. The baskets are quite intensively used by tribal peoples in day-to-day work, that is, firewood collection, carrying food, and transporting any kinds of items. Beautifully craft-baskets represent the handiwork and cultural heritage of the tribal community. The use of Hora is common to the Nagas, Garos, Khasis, and Rabhas, among the different tribes of hill people in Northeast India. The basket is hung at the back with the help of a strap that passes over the forehead, which makes handling heavy loads easier while crossing hilly terrain. In some cases, the Hora is used not only for moving but also for keeping grains and household essentials. The Hora basket is in fact utility and not merely a monument of self-sufficiency and supreme sustainability. The basket-making craftsmanship has been inherited from one generation to another, conserving the unique weaving method of each tribal community. Now, there is a growing acknowledgement for handcrafted tribal products that has helped in reviving their own traditional basketry among these indigenous people.
