short description
There is a vigorous life for the textile tradition of the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. Among the favorite hand-woven stuff of the tribe is a cotton wrap with large bands on either side and a narrow band in the middle. Both Apatani men and women wear these wraps on auspicious occasions and in everyday life.
Weaving has always borne an important mark on the identity of Apatanis, and women have enjoyed the primary role of weavers. Now here, like any other part of the country, cotton is grown and wrappers are woven on traditional loin looms passed down through generations. The contrasting warp and weft design of the edges and centre of this wrapper speak of Apatani sensibilities that center around their deepest communion with nature.

Traditional Cotton Wrapper design
description
Lightweight and comfortable, this cotton wrapper is perfect for the climate and way of living of the region. It is often combined with some other traditional attire and ornaments, making it an indispensable part of Apatani cultural representation. Apart from its utilitarian purpose, the textile form stands to emblematize the heritage and artistry of this tribe in their struggle to preserve their native traditions in weaving.
Despite the elements of modernity, the Apatani tribe still strives to protect and preserve its traditional textiles and introduce them into bigger markets. Highly emblematic today, the hand-woven wrappers pay tribute to the artistic achievements and sustainable practices of Arunachal Pradesh indigenous peoples.
