The Lingo Jatra is a major festival among the Muria tribe found in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, which venerate their supreme deity Lingo Pen. The Murias are an age-old tribe having retained almost their entire culture related to nature, agriculture, and foods. Their belief system revolves primarily around the Anga and Pen gods. The majority of deities are actual clan deities, while Anga gods have an altogether different identity with temples built for them, which is atypical in the sect.
On the occasion of Lingo Jatra, every four years, a grand festival is held at the shrine of Lingo Pen in Semurgaon, North Bastar. On this occasion, the deities from the surrounding villages are taken to the place to bid homage. The festival, thus, acts to bind the tribal community's cultural ties and reinforce their spirit. The documentary film, "Lingo Jatra," offers a rare opportunity to view the happenings in 1991- a glimpse into some of the rituals and traditions of the Muria people.
The preservation of such festivals is enforced with modernization gushing in on indigenous customs as they remain relevant for the Muria tribe's rich heritage. Recognition and documentation of these traditions will therefore provide sustenance to the tribe's cultural legacy.
