description
Hill Korbas tribes also known as Hill Korwa tribes are inhabitants of Chhattisgarh, mainly residing in the Sarguja district, which boast thickly-rooted traditions and rituals of distinctive mythology. Once revered as hunters and warriors, the present say in their lives has undergone dramatic changes caused by the depletion of forests and game.
Most have now turned to agriculture and fishing to sustain the lives they lead with their communities. Tribal myths state that the Hill Korbas have originated from a scarecrow, which stands in the middle of a rice field holding a bow and arrow.
It is believed that the waking up of the scarecrow, upon the request of Sita, caused Lord Ram to give birth to the tribe. This legendary account symbolically connects history between the hill Korbas with hunting and nature. This film takes the Hill Korba from that point: disappearing rituals and practices. It also tells of Bagrai and Bachrai, a legendary hunting expedition attached to their folklore.
Modernization and deforestation threaten again their customs. Attention must be paid to documentation and heritage preservation.
