The Saura paintings of Odisha, India, is a tribal art tradition unique to Saura tribes, one of the most demographically significant tribal communities of the region. TThe traditional paintings, known as Itals or Evitals, are done on walls of the house constructed from red or brown clay using natural dyes prepared from rice paste, flowers, leaves, and white stone. These are formed by intricate designs, geometric figures, and stylized human forms and these all animal forms have deep cultural and spiritual meanings. Saura paintings are essentially ritualistic, made to lay tribute to the departed, avert sickness, and ensure prosperity for the family. They are associated with a fertility cult as they symbolize prosperity and protection. The central theme is often the Saura household, which is presented square, circular, or rectangular in shape, showing their daily activities, nature, and spiritual elements. These paintings are very much like Warli art but have more intricate detailing and have flowing patterns with no fixed boundaries. The book "Tribal Art of India" by S.K. Bhowmik (2003) gives an elaborate account of Saura paintings. The tradition has also been vividly captured in "Divine Expressions: The Saura Paintings of Orissa", a video by Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata, through interviews of artists and official commentary with English subtitles.
