description
The Bigul is an old traditional instrument mainly associated with marriages and important cultural functions, which originated from the Maria Gond tribe, which is said to be a sub-tribe of the Gond Tribe mainly settled in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. They are a group of people who sincerely believe in the rich culture and the environment; thus, they celebrate life through music and rituals.
The Bigul is very important in marriage affairs, announcing the union and celebrating the occasion with loud announcements. A casting technique is used in the making of these instruments, thus allowing the making of an instrument producing distinctive loud sound. The Bigul is characterized by jingles attached at the lower end of the instrument, which tinkle when played.
These jingles, apart from providing a certain depth to the sound, symbolize prosperity, joy, and celebrations associated with the wedding. The Bigul is an important cultural instrument for the Maria Gond tribe as it symbolizes both the importance of the event in Gondi culture, as well as the skill of the people of making instruments from materials available around them.
Through its sound, the Bigul announces in the ears of the community that they are invited for the celebrations and to share in the tribe's rich cultural practices. In conclusion, the Bigul used by the Maria Gond tribe is more than a musical instrument; it speaks for their cultural identity, celebrations, and traditions from times immemorial.
