Livelihood of Tagin Tribe , arunachal pradesh

The Tagins form a major indigenous group in Arunachal Pradesh and mainly populate the Upper Subansiri district of the state. The Tagins are known for their unique cultural identity and belong to the Tibeto-Burman language family of the tribe. Their lifestyle is deeply entwined with nature, considered an extension of their traditions and practices. Festival celebrations like Chalo Loku together highlight their communal spirit and heritage. So the Tagins are a vital part of Arunachal Pradesh's cultural mosaic

Agriculture is the lifeline of the economy of the Tagin Tribe, and they are engaged in wet and dry terrace farming, with rice, millet, and maize being their staple crops. Hunting and fishing complement their agricultural pursuits with skills passed on through generations. They even add to their income via handicrafts and by weaving bamboo. Their economy being wholly subsistence-oriented indicates that the tribes people are relying very much on the minimally sustainable natural resources

The Tagins’ livelihood practices are intertwined with their cultural identity. Hunting, for example, carries social and ritualistic importance, with tools like bows and arrows (Iri and Opok) symbolizing courage and tradition. Their festivals, such as Mlokom Yullo, integrate ritualistic dances and music, celebrating agricultural cycles and communal harmony. These traditions emphasize their respect for nature and ancestral wisdom

Adversities like both deforestation and climate change and then these modern realities affect Tagin people and their age-old tradition. Poor education and health and other infrastructural facilities further impede their socio-economic progress. There still continues a pressing challenge of reducing or striking a balance between development and cultural preservation while more often than not the younger generation is migrating for better opportunities,

In the face of several challenges, the Tagin Tribe adopts various traditional techniques, such as crop rotation and organic farming, in order to protect the environment. Preservation of forests and biodiversity reflects the societies' efforts toward ecological balance. Awareness campaigns in collaboration with organizations seek to document and revive traditional practices toward a sustainable future honoring a beautiful bygone era.
