short description
Considered one of the many vibrant ethnic communities in Assam, the Rabha tribe is famous for its exceptionally rich culture. Though the Rabhas do not have any single national festival, each group within the community has its own separate celebrations. One of the major events is known as Baikho, a spring festival dedicated to the goddess of wealth considered Baikho. This festival used to be celebrated with a great show involving all manner of rituals and festivities to ensure prosperity and well-being.
However, in due course, the splendor and joyous spirit that used to characterize the festival of Baikho became much reduced in the villages, and very few of their traditional customs are being observed. The Rabha people are still attaching cultural importance to themselves, but it is the forces of modernization and changing lifestyle patterns that have led to the decline of observance of such traditional celebrations. But there is an endeavor on every front to conserve the rich heritage of the tribe and sustain the customs for posterity.
