This is a traditional performed by the Sangtam Naga of Nagaland called Sangphao Dance. It is performed in an important ritual before going on hunting expeditions as it symbolizes bravery, unity and preparation. The Sangtam Nagas are historically good hunters and warriors and such remains in the martial spirit.
The movements are those of men carrying spears and swords, and shields moving in unison to the beat of traditional Naga drums and hailing the noise of the warriors as they imitate hunting movements. It is the dance of celebrating the ancestors who lived by hunting.
Sangphao Dance is one of the dances engaging tribal gatherings; apart from hunting festivals, thus expressing the value of culture that it is in the Sangtam Naga people. The hunt is no longer popular owing to modernization and protective laws, so the significance of the dance now culminates in referring to the heritage while the identity forged with the battlefield still cuts very much into Naga identity.
