short description
The Apatani are hardly common: they are an indigenous identity within the state of Arunachal Pradesh, India. This identity is expressed in their national patterns and elaborate textile traditions. Most of their self-attire is found in the textile waistcoat, of substantial symbolic value. This white, stitched waistcoat is an article of men's traditional wear of the Apatani, most importantly decorated in the central portion of the back with indigo geometrical designs.
The waistcoat reflects proficiency in textile weaving and embroidery for Apatani, from handwoven cotton. The indigo panel at the back of the waistcoat depicts many spiritual and cultural meanings, while geometric designs present the narrative of their artistic expression-and for them, nature is an imperative tie. Sometimes, these geometric patterns carry motifs from tribal mythology, other folktales and even the immediate surrounding areas.
