Stitched blue kameez
description
Santhal is one of the largest indigenous tribes and found throughout Jharkhand, They are known for many unique cultural expressions, including their interestingly diverse types of attires. For instance, stitched blue kameez, which is worn by Santhal men, is an everyday and ceremonial dress that is a short-sleeved shirt with a collar.
This kameez is generally handmade from cotton fabric locally available, thus making it light, soft, and good for warm and humid weather, like what exists in the places where the Santhal people live. The blue shade is commonly believed to connote simplicity, serenity, and a deep attachment of the Santhals with nature. A dhoti or lungi was traditionally worn by a man from the Santhal society, and the kameez is expected to be a functional upper garment for completing their dress code.
While the culture of these people creates a strong impression of using natural dyes and simple but strong designs in its textile tradition, much change has come over the dressing style over time due to modernization. However, the traditional kameez has managed to survive and continues to be part of the wardrobe, symbolizing continuity in culture and identity.
