The Scarf Garment refers to a finely woven, physical cloth marked by geometrical patterned longitudinal stripes, usually wrapped around the body by the Lepcha tribe-an indigenous community of Sikkim and parts of West Bengal, India. Scarf hence stratifies the personal identity from the public and often includes much within as a local heritage, handcrafted artistry, and the culture it embraces.

Lepcha weaving is an ancient heirloom. It was passed down through generations. Such scarves are generally woven from pure cotton or wool collected from around and dyed with natural colors very vibrant to that of the landscapes that surround the eastern Himalayas. The geometric patterns and stripe motifs sealed their meanings, often denoting either nature or tribal folktales and ancestral lineage.
Lepcha society interprets scarf garments in many ways: accessory, protection from the cold, and marker during festivals, rituals, or merely everyday life. Absolutely amazing art of weaving brought alive by the dexterity of Lepcha women, since traditionally it has been practiced with backstrap looms, hence giving adornments a unique style and perfection for every piece.
Not only this cultural identity, but it is becoming popular in the realm of contemporary fashion and sustainable textiles. Local artisans are getting support from various government initiatives to revive and promote Lepcha weaving, signifying that this rich tradition would not die but keep thriving well into the future.
Today, Scarf Garments endure in its own right as a Lepcha heritage artifact, preserving in memory their material culture and artistic excellence.
