A woven wrapper of Mishing tribe
description
Mishing community lives mainly in the north-eastern states Arunachal Pradesh, famous for destructive weaving traditions. Mishing textiles have a reputation for being vibrant multi-colored geometrics, a woven wrapper that serves the di-functional purpose of wearability and cultural symbolism
Traditionally made by Mishing women on the loin loom, these wrappers are colorful and rich in designs as they are, which depict the close importance of the tribe with nature and heritage. For instance, the geometrical designs of the Mishing women commonly are the symbolic representations of ambient surroundings, like hills, rivers, and flora; these hold spiritual meanings linked with the Mishing culture.
While they may be considered as daily wear by Mishing women, these wrappers are usually draped over the shoulder or wrapped around the body, worn only in rare occasions of festivals, weddings, and rituals: signifying grace, identity, and pride the community at large. The use of natural dyes leaves a real touch on these handwoven textile products, thus maintaining their sustainable and eco-friendliness.
