short description
The Mikir or Karbi, one of the many tribes that comprise an indigenous community in Assam, are said to possess colorful cultural expressions and distinctive modes of traditional dressing. Among the various garments worn by the tribe, the long fringes cotton coat holds prominence for its graceful design, functional construction, and profound cultural significance. Traditionally, this garment is a coat made of hand-woven white cotton, designed in quite a simple and symbolically aesthetic way. Following the construction method, two narrow pieces of cotton cloth are stitched together, leaving intentional openings for the neck and sleeves to produce a traditional, open-an-fit structure. This construction method mirrors the traditional weaving and sewing methods of the Mikir tribe, where garments are created with great precision and cultural knowledge embedded in history.

One of the brightest bits of decoration is found on the long cotton fringes at the bottom hem of the coat, which sway freely while dancing and during rituals, imparting liveliness and ornamentation to the coat. These fringes then act as visual goodies for being a part of tradition and continuity; they bind one with cultural roots. The coat has also been embroidered with designed lines, purposely butting in at the lower hem, in the middle section, and along the two sides. These embroidered patterns, usually in bright threads, draw from motifs of nature and tribal life. Through them, the design adds to the expression of identity, tradition, and craftsmanship. This long fringes cotton coat, worn in special and traditional ceremonies, stands tall as a representation of Mikir/Karbi tribe heritage and craftsmanship.
