Kunbi weave means a handwoven fabric from the Kunbi of Goa. The weave is cotton-based and is characterized by its simple checked patterns and brilliant borders of red, green, and yellow. These three shades somehow signify different attributes of life, imbuing the fabric with much cultural significance.
Kunbi saree, which for long has been worn by the Kunbi women, is said to be the first among farming communities in Goa. Being small and practical, long lengths of the saree draped by women do not create any obstruction while working in the fields. This handloom has now become synonymous with the culture of Goa, and there are many ongoing initiatives to revive this art of weaving. Now, Kunbi weaving is being revivified in contemporary forms both in terms of culture and modern designs. The artisans and designers are working in collaboration for the survival of this craft, leaving behind the legacy of the Kunbi community through Goan textiles.
