short description
The Lambadi Tribes are native tribes in the state of Maharashtra, India which have vivid culture manifesting their splendid costumes. Among these is the quite blatant cotton petticoat, which takes the day-to-day treatment by the Lambadi women whilst becoming an outlet for expression and craftsmanship associated with the tribe. A cotton petticoat epitomizing skill in textile arts, is the everyday wear for the Lambadi women. The upper part-especially around the waist-is finished off with a fine embroidered cotton cloth, often provided with some padding for comfort and support. The embroidery is with bright-colored threads such as yellow, green, red, blue, and white, earmarking the close association of nature and the celebrations of life that the tribe embraces. Symbolism exists with each color and pattern that describe the Lambadis' beliefs and traditions (Narayan, 2010).

The central part shows this in another mouthful-naturedly printed cotton fabric that adds yet another interest and diversity in totalling a design. Lower borders are too ostentatiously embroidered and stacked upon each other with appliqué work adding to the ornamentation. But, such embellishments are made not merely for ornamentation but also identity: the wearer's social status as well as one's cultural pride. But it is to be much more than this: a cotton petticoat can be seen as a canvas filled with all the memories, identities, and creative spirits of the tribe-laden with history, endurance, togetherness, and the carrying on of tribal skills through every thread and every motif.
