This traditional cotton headgear is considered by the Khyang as a true symbol of culture and carries important symbolic and ceremonial meanings. It consists of a long, narrow strip of handwoven cotton cloth with a broad red stripe along the center and two thinner stripes adjacent to the borders on either side. The contrast of colors is not just for beauty but also bears the tribal traditional significance of strength and identity.
The headdress is finished on both ends with fringes of fine cotton threads to add decoration as well as to reflect the spirit of hand-crafted artistry that is an integral part of the Khyang weaving tradition. Whenever worn for ceremonial purposes or community rituals, the headdress signifies a sense of community and is usually worn with traditional dress to complete ceremonial attire. The design simplicity is somewhat compensated for by painstaking handwork distinguishing each thread with cultural meaning; truly, it is more than a piece of cloth: it represents the strong Khyang belief in tradition, craftsmanship, and naturals.
