description
Bhutia group of Sikkim is well known for its heritage of textile traditions and clothing styles. Among the various traditional clothing is a long-sleeved upper garment, which has been specially stitched using aubergine-colored fabric with beautiful lime green lappets designed for fastening at the side. This is one of the most stylish representations of bhutia culture, combining practicality with elegance.
The colors of this garment are by themselves representational. The deep and rich hue in aubergine is said to represent dignity and strength. The lime green lappets, however, are a complete contrast and terrifically signify prosperity and harmony. The traditional way for fastening is functional and traditional and ensures comfort and ease of movement, but with the sophisticated appearance of Bhutia attire.
This upper garment is a cherished possession during cultural events, religious ceremonies, and important personal events because it mutilates pride and identity among the Bhutia people. The intensive stitching and design elements represent the skill of Bhutia weavers and tailors, which was passed down generation after generation without getting lost.
Every piece is a testament to the Bhutia community because it speaks of their devotion to their artistic heritage when it comes to clothing. It speaks of the past, not just the present, aside from being but one more piece of clothing. It holds cultural continuity with the past and accentuates the Bhutia tribe's deep-rooted understanding of custom and culture in Sikkim. This garment stands out as an epitome of the unique elegance portrayed by the tribe in their lives, as well as the continuity of their rich textile heritage.
