description
This native spear of the Naga tribe of Nagaland conveys the warrior culture and hunting traditions imprinted in the mind of one of the Northeast India tribes. Fully fashioned of forest wood, this spear is symbolic of the craftsmanship of the tribe, showcasing their dependence on their natural resources for crafting tools that aid in their very survival.
While in most cases of simple material, this spear speaks volumes of cultural symbolism. It was used as a weapon in warfare, and hunting, and for ceremonial purposes and stands for courage and tribal identity. The Naga is reputed for their warrior tradition and such weapons were personalized and regarded as a symbol of status amongst the clans.
The wood is representative of the environmental adaptability of the people, who locally harvested bamboo and hardwoods to skillfully craft balanced throwing and thrusting weapons. In many Naga cultures, spears served as symbols of initiation, bestowed upon young men passing into adulthood.
The spears only recently ceased to be utilized as weapons of conflict; nowadays, the spear exists solely as a vibrant symbol, sparking stories about tribal endurance, pride, and artistry as it often appears in festivals and museums.
