short description
The wooden plate from Maram Naga is ornamental with nature and is an essential part of the art for usual lifestyle and domestic requirements of the tribal people. This forms one of the larger Naga tribes who mostly reside in Manipur, particularly concentrated under Senapati District. Their traditional tools and utensils have a very close bonding with nature and also a very rich resource of craftsmanship. This is a leaf-shaped wooden plate having a direct correlation with the physical forms of nature. This is painstakingly carved from a single piece of wood; hence it is an exemplar of skill in woodwork of the tribes. Notable parts of this plate are the rectangular shaped handle, which helps in gripping as well as has a rectangular perforation at the center, which probably is useful to either hang it with or facilitates easy handling while feeding. The aesthetics are in the design and easy to put into use for feeding livestock.

This plate is meant mainly to feed the pigs that are so important in Maram Naga agricultural practices and in animal husbandry. Pigs are generally found in the courtyard of the women's houses, feeding them through a wooden plate, thus reducing waste and providing a clean method of distribution. The wooden nature makes it more usable for regular use as it is much stronger. It is far more representative than just a feeding plate; it signifies Maram Naga values such as simplicity, utility and, in harmony with nature of things. Such artifacts remain culturally important as they demonstrate the self sustenance of tribal communities.
