short description
An image of a woman, wood carved by word Sutradhar, is vivid as well as expressive and thus represents fine traditional tribal art. The figure has been carved from a single piece of wood and stands on a triangular base. The form is often used to establish balance and sacred grounding in tribal carvings; therefore, this sculpture stands as among the best examples of the Sutradhar community's art, reflecting its distinct sensibilities and cultural narratives. The face of the sculpture is almost triangulated in shape, flattened on the cheeks, which means that there is a stylized approach to presenting this human figure-a different style altogether from folk and tribal interpretation. This allows abstraction by the artist to present the figure in a manner free to the anatomy.

Such vivid, unfettered colors as red, green, yellow, and white augment the importance of the sculpture so that it may be said to possess symbolic depth. Red signifies fertility and strength; green nature; yellow spirituality; while white indicates purity. The colors are applied in the traditional way, either vegetable or mineral pigments. This is characteristic of Sutradhar art. This is the Sutradhars of West Bengal, traditional wood-carvers, sculptors, and other woodworkers by profession. And the very name Sutradhar means one who narrates stories, while the people of that tribe, it is believed, have narrated myths and social customs through the medium of their art. The wooden carving represents the culture celebrating womanhood alongside traditional dresses while also sustaining the aesthetic identity of the tribe called Sutradhar.
