A cylindrical bamboo water bucket
description
This traditional water bucket has been created and used by the Shan tribe, most commonly known in Assam. It is a cylindrical-type water carrier, carefully woven together from split bamboo. Its uniqueness, however, lies with the application of lac on its outer surface. Lac not only adds beauty to the object but serves an essential functional purpose- making the bamboo vessel waterproof and adding years of life. The square base, with its four distinct projective corners, offers good stability so that the bucket can remain upright even on uneven surfaces.
Bamboo artisan works are a hallmark of the tribal craft of Northeast India, and this water bucket typifies the ingenuity of the Shan community in turning natural resources into useful sustainable household articles. Its design also speaks of practicality blended with ecologically friendly products.
