short description
A handcrafted traditional container of the Garo tribe in Meghalaya, a state located in the northeast of India, is a Vessel with a Spherical Body. The Garo people use household materials like gourd, bamboo, cane, wood, etc., integrated very closely into nature. Gourds are vegetable plants and among them, the most popular for practical and not very sour but biodegradable uses are used by the Garos. This vessel is made from a carefully harvested, sun-dried, hollowed and cleaned gourd. This configuration is spherical- Bodied, giving it a large storage capacity, and a tube-like neck converging to a small circular opening at the top. The small opening prevents spilling and slows down evaporation. Thus, it is a perfect holder for water, washes of medicine, and traditional fermented drinks like bitchi (rice beer).

It gives a very natural power and lightness and absorbs shock in an adequate way to act as a good insulator, thereby helping to keep the liquids cool for some time. Within the Garo households, these vessels are both functional and symbolic-they prosper in routine household chores, religious activities such as offering pujas and in cultural ceremonies like weddings. They are the organic source from which the tribe skews its organic living methods with available means from the local environment. These gourd vessels bear faithful witness to the ingenuity of the Garo tribe and their great appreciation for nature and continuity in the keeping of the traditional form of knowledge passed down from generation to generation.
