short description
The historical threads of the Santhal tribe, one of India's most vivid and oldest indigenous communities, are woven into their identity in a very rich tradition that adorns the body with significant meaning necklaces and ear-piercing adornments. Among these necklaces, there is a very traditional nose-stud which is a very small significant ornament worn by Santhal women. It is such that it takes the form of a small conical head with a bent end pin that is attached to it, which ties the ornament tightly to the nostrils. Very simple, indeed: not ornamented too much but detailed very well: here is a nose stud. Head conical as it is symbolic in terms of many tribal cultures-moiron in the feminine and spiritual, allegiances of ancestral custom.

The bent pin at the base ensures that the ornament stays in place, thus proving the functional aspect of tribal design. This small pin is what keeps the ornament secure during strenuous dance movement and everyday chores: Form and function marry in tribal design. This ornament can be worn on a daily basis or during some special rituals and ceremonies that speak of her identity as a Santhal woman, of her belonging to the community and sometimes of her marital or social status. Although small in size, it has great emotional and cultural meanings and is often inherited from mother to daughter as part of family tradition. This humble yet elegant piece of jewellery will remain a continuing testimony to the artistic legacy and cultural pride of the Santhal people.
