short description
The Triangular Stone Celt is one of the typical farm implements of the Naga community, which is probably one of the most populous indigenous groups dwelling in the hilly regions of Nagaland in Northeast India. It speaks of initial technological excellence of the Naga, which has considerably evolved as a result of the close association of people with their land and the subsistence farming livelihood. This stone celt is triangular, relatively small in size, and has a straight and sharp cutting edge, making it well-suited for light agricultural operations: for planting, digging, or clearing of vegetation. The name 'celt' refers to a prehistoric stone tool shaped and sharpened for chopping or cutting, and still seems to be used practically by the Naga people.

It can be hand-held or hafted onto a wooden handle depending on the intended use. It can be used for jhum cultivation, an extensive practice among the Naga tribes, where a forested area is cleared for cultivation for a few years and allowed to regenerate. The whole intricate process of making such celts illustrates the Naga out-turned understanding of local materials, and adaptability of ancient tools-making techniques into modern structure. Though there are newer equivalents, these traditional tools are revered for assessing their cultural and ecological sustainability.
