This is locally manufactured winnowing fan from Odisha and winnowing grain, separating it from its chaff, is carried out using the traditional instrument by the Gadaba tribe. It is something deeper than the flat bamboo splits which make up the traditional fan-it is an expression of the in-depth knowledge of the tribe's expertise regarding all kinds of useful forms of bamboo craftsmanship. The carefully designed fan was in 'U' shape with just a rim made out of two flat bamboo splits that were tightly bound to the body with strips of bamboo skin.
Gadabas live mostly at Koraput in southern Odisha. They lead a very simplistic and sustainable lifestyle and lotus using bamboo weaving skills. The items such as baskets, mats, and winnowing fans are not produced solely for home utility purposes but also for rituals and community-interconnected exchange. These implements test the daily agricultural operations of subsistence farming communities, where manual cleaning of grain occurs. This winnowing fan is hence not only functional, but also ergonomic in form. There are two marked important corners at the base which allow better handling and better control during the winnowing operation. The fan is very durable due to its tight weaving and tough material even after regular daily usage.
