Made of solid wood, this breastplate is a tradition dear to the Naga tribes in Nagaland because of their warrior culture and very good craftsmanship.. This armor served to protect the body as well as to symbolize. Normally worn across the chest, it serves its purpose in protective and symbolic ways.
The plate was probably one of the war regalia used during battles, hunting expeditions, or ceremonial dances. Given its designing simplicity and robustness, it is an expression of the practical ingenuity of the Naga artisans who make use of materials locally available to them: wood, cane, and bamboo-to create objects of every-day and ritualistic significance. Apart from protection, the breastplate acted as a symbol of honor, bravery, and tribal affiliations and was often passed down through generations. Variants of such chest guards were elaborately made with beads, boar tusks, or brass elements to signify rank or achievements in battle.
