Traditional Red Karen Tribe Bag
description
Stunning rectangular bag made by an artist from the Red Karen Tribe, a museum of craftsmanship in textiles. Bag made of durable black cotton threads and embellished with complex weavings in different colors, testifying to the community's vivacious aesthetic sensibilities. Strips of metallic thread (zari) have been cleverly incorporated into the fabric, linking ceremonial and decorative motifs with tribal identity and social occasions. A very pronounced feature of this bag is its elaborate employment of job's tears, or natural seed beads, arranged in linear patterns and embroidered flowers. Such beadwork may adorn the bag but it also carries tribal meaning associated with fertility, protection, and connection to nature. The job's tears confer an interesting texture and visual contrast to the bag. The bag was once used for carrying items or for making offerings. Yet, its fine construction also permitted the use of such bags as festival attire or for ritual, making it a crossover between a useful item and a piece of art.
