short description
The Kapi Dao Iron is the good form of the distinguished hand weapon traditionally for the Naga tribe for its unusual shape and dual purposes being both terminal tool and status symbol. The Nagas have been the tribal commune within Nagaland and adjacent parts of Northeast India, and they have a very rich martial tradition evident in weapons like the Kapi Dao being extremely significant in the warrior life of Nagas. The cutting edge, almost triangular, of this dao has a beautiful sharp slightly curved edge very suitable for slashing or chopping; the dull edge is straight and very thick providing stability and strength while the top of the blade slants slightly upward way towards the edge for improved aerodynamic efficacy.

The thickened wooden handle at the top has a flattened insertion for the tang of the bladeinto it making it sturdy, comfortable grip wise. Iron ferrule strengthens the joining point of the blade and handle, and two plaited cane bindings are wrapped around it contributing to grip and beautification. Below the cane bands, the decorative cane work becomes evident on the handle, lacquered for preservation and beauty. A very striking feature of this dao is the ornamentation with dyed animal hair packed inside rows of holes on one face of the lower handle, indicating nobility or personal distinction. It is definitely a Kapi Dao which indeed is a weapon, a cultural artifact of the Nagas and their craftsmanship, identity, and martial heritage.
