short description
The Iron Dao of the Lotha Naga tribe is a traditional-edged tool regarded as a weapon as well as a multifunctional implement of daily tribal life. The Lothas are one of the major Naga tribes in Nagaland and are celebrated for their craftsmanship, with weapons being symbolically significant during cultural and ceremonial occasions. This well-illustrated dao indeed shows the deep-rooted culture of martial tradition of the tribe and their ingeniousness in working with natural materials. With the heavy iron blade and slightly curved sharp cutting edge, this dao is particularly characterized by chopping and hacking. The upper side of the blade is quite blunt with a mild inward curve within the center, presenting a peculiar profile.

The lower side of the blade is narrow for the entire part, making it give weight for balance and control over wielding. Tang of the blade, which is inserted into the handle, has a tight fit in a cylindrical-shaped weapon handle, being a little flat and made of wood. Ornately decorated with nine plaited bands of cane, its handle is the prettiest feature of this dao. These bands serve to embody not only a source of comfort and security in grip but also of aesthetic and symbolic value. Cane binding is a traditional feature in all Naga weapons, often representing the warrior’s rank or achievements. This iron dao continues to serve ceremonial rites and symbolically represents the skill and craftsmanship of the Lotha Nagas and their fighting heritage, anchoring their tribal identity and history.
