The Kachin belong to a northeast ethnic group of the state referred to Arunachal Pradesh; the bag is reminiscent of their cotton tradition. The shape of the bag is rectangular and has an odd two side construction: one side is heavily woven with a riot of red, green, yellow, and white cotton threads and, on the opposite side, bold red and blue stripes.
Even more decoratively the bag is lined with alternating red and blue cotton balls, whose stitches grace the lateral edges and the strap joint, imparting charm while emphasizing the cultural details. These embellishments enhance the aesthetics and may bear some traditional or symbolic meaning in the community. It is a bag which is deceptively practical-much like one's everyday activities while carrying the simple essentials; and yet this bag is something one wears during traditional occasions, underscoring the tribal belief: that even their wear must keep under ornamentation and serve utilitarian purposes.
