short description
This is a traditional waist belt of the Adi Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh; it is very intricately woven with plaited cane strips. This belt is a cultural aesthetic utility showing the close relationship of the tribe with its natural environment and craftsmanship. The weaving pattern is tight and uniform, with a small section uniquely woven to probably mark identity or for structural strength, presenting a visual contrast with added significance.

It is used by men as well as women for an occasion at which it is supposed to be worn as a part of the daily trunked costumes of the tribe or during traditional dances and rituals. For the Adis, the role of clothes and ornaments is much beyond mere utility; they reveal much of the social customs, age, and status of the person. The cane is taken from local forests, hence emphasizing the sustainable living practices. The Adi Tribe is one of the large tribes of Arunachal Pradesh-most of which is notable for its entirely developed traditional skills in weaving, basketry, and bamboo-cane crafts. This waist belt forms a part of the broader material culture of theirs, which emphasizes harmony with nature, practicality, and of course ethnicity.
