short description
Naga tribe is one of the indigenous communities in Nagaland, Northeast India and Chunga is a traditional bamboo water vessel of this tribe. Nagas have used bamboo for centuries in making tools and utensils that were functional, environment-friendly, and closely linked with nature. Chunga is a good example of a resourceful and sustainable lifestyle. It is generally made of one large thick mature bamboo segment, cut carefully and hollowed out to form a container. One of the bamboo's nodes naturally seals the base while the top is closed by a lid composed of another bamboo node. The lid is fastened with coiled cane strips which serve the double purpose of securing the lid and enhancing the decorative appeal. The vessel itself is often encircled with bands of cane, which strengthen its structure and prevent it from cracking.

Chunga is a good example of a resourceful and sustainable lifestyle. It is generally made of one large thick mature bamboo segment, cut carefully and hollowed out to form a container. The lid is fastened with coiled cane strips which serve the double purpose of securing the lid and enhancing the decorative appeal. The vessel itself is often encircled with bands of cane, which strengthen its structure and prevent it from cracking.
The lid includes a cane handle to facilitate lifting and fastening. By and large, Chunga is used to keep and carry water during long journeys or fieldwork. It becomes very handy in daily Naga life as it is light, insulated by nature and can be carried anywhere easily. Today, such bamboo vessels not only have value in their functional aspect, but are also considered as culture and aesthetics. Chunga in Indian Museum, Kolkata, is one of those preserving elements highlighting indigenous craftsmanship of the Naga tribe and their coexistence with nature.
