A conical cane and bamboo helmet
description
The Chang Naga Tribe of Nagaland manufactures these traditional helmets, which stand as very indicative representations of indigenous armor production and artistry. Expertly constructed from bamboo and cane strips into a conical form with an oval base, it served the dual function of protection and cultural expression.
An inner layer of delicate bamboo was woven for strength and comfort, while the outer surface is enrobed in brilliant-red-yellow cane matting, reflecting the artistic culture of the tribe. One distinguishing feature of this helmet is the unconventional decoration with orchid skin, a material that, as defined within Naga traditions, is spiritually or symbolically endowed. Such helmets were traditionally used by warriors and hunters, who wore them not only for protection but along with them to signify tribal rank and accomplishments. The Chang Naga—who are known for their fierce independence and fights are often described as warrior Naga—decorated their helmets with embellishments that portray stories of valor or ancestry or community affiliation.
