description
This is a conically shaped hat worn by Chang Nagas of Nagaland. It is an excellent example of tribal craftsmanship in tightly woven cane strips for durability and beauty. The fine texture and stiffness of the weave are the results of pure craftsmanship.
Flat strips of bamboo made the internal structure of the hat, where strength and conical shape are the axes of influence. Dried animal hair fringe on one side of the hat, a unique and traditional ornamented adornment of the tribes, stands there for the declaration of status and identity. Such hats are usually worn on ceremonial occasions, tribal meetings, or cultural dances: the practical and symbolical wears. The hat offers protection from harsh weather conditions common within the hills; it is also a visual manifestation of their cultural pride.
