short description
This terracotta model is a handcrafted representation of a male figure among the Maria Gonds. The shapings of the model will be such that it reflects very closely the attire of the males and is adorned as per the practice within the Maria Gond community, one of the major tribal groups in Chhattisgarh. The clay used in creating such figurines is natural, and firing gives this distinct reddish-brown shade which is very characteristic of terracotta art. Here, the entire lower body of the figure is covered in an off-white cotton cloth as it is an everyday garment, which the Maria Gond man would wear for cultural and ceremonial occasions. Their head and neck is elaborately adorned with white beaded ornaments to symbolize the tribe's deprivation byfew, makes simple but symbolic jewelry fashioned with local materials like bones, shells, and beads.

The other visually appealing aspect of this figure is that legs have been made in great detail for the dressing on arms and wrists with bangles made of metallic and cotton thread. However, these drifting bangles are not only ornamental; they are consider cultural markers, potentially indicating tribal identity, age group, or social status. The calmness and composure in the posture and expression of this figure are easily construed as harmony with nature and extremely spiritual lifestyle aspects with that sense of community life among the Maria Gond peoples. Such terracotta models are mainly employed in ritual acts, could be storytelling events, or community festivals; they tend to serve as important vessels of memory and identity for tribal peoples.
