This sculpture makes a portrait of a standing figure of Buddha that is extraordinarily rare, having strength and compassion, preparedness to take one towards enlightenment. The wooden sculpture using the traditional technique of carving reflects the skill of Monpa artisans. Monpa woodcarvers mostly carve their religious icons from local timbers, such as teak or sandalwood, taking much influence from Tibetan Buddhist traditions. His standing position refers to that of a teacher and protector; in these times, he is depicted either with his right hand upraised in Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness) or both hands placed in different mudras, which symbolize what he teaches for Buddhism.

description
These are the sculptures employed in monasteries, prayer halls, and personal altars that help focus in meditation and provide spiritual meaning. Most of the Monpas are followers of the Gelugpa sect of Mahayana Buddhism and have a rich tradition of arts that blends into their belief system. The richness of wood carving speaks of one's faith but is also heritage culture that has been preserved through generations. Traditional heritage wood carving has made sacred artistry flourish through all ages in the Monpa artisans' symbolic and intricate sculptures.
