Sort of the squarish base basket has long been produced for local purposes by the Khasi tribe, an indigenous community which is actually present in the lend between the dates of northeastern India, especially Meghalaya. The Khasi are well known for bamboo crafts; these speak of their close attachment to nature and a sustainable way of living. Made of split bamboo which is largely found around the village houses of the Khasi for its availability, strength and flexibility. Its most notable feature is a squared base, made of four sturdy strips of bamboo giving it a very wide and stable foundation. It also allows even weight distribution on it and thus is very convenient to carry heavy or bulk load like firewood, vegetables or crops harvested.

Artistically woven into flat strips of bamboo body shows the exquisite skill of the Khasi artisans. The tight weaving will stand the wear and tear. To reinforce the structure against wear and tear, especially on top, a circular rim is placed over an additional split strip of bamboo: this helps in maintaining the shape of the basket when it is carried or hung. These baskets are part of the cultural heritage of the Khasi people and as sustainable design. They have been pillared to be preserved in most such collections today, like the Indian Museum, Kolkata, which again provides a permanent testimony to the juxtaposition of theory with practice, of traditional craftsmanship, through the marvelous use of natural materials by the Khasi tribe.
