short description
The real traditional handicraft of the Kuki tribe is presented best in the example of a Square Base Conical Basket, originating mostly from northern Indian states like Manipur and bits of Nagaland and Mizoram. The tribals are unparalleled in their skills in basketry and the art of weaving bamboo into functional, hardy baskets that assume a major part of their day-to-day living. The special long conical shape of the Square Base Conical Basket gives it a square base, which stabilizes it. Not only does the design provide serviceability; it is equally aesthetically pleasing, hence suitable for carrying food, herbs, and other very important things. The body of the basket is tightly woven with split bamboo giving it a very flexible and resilient body.

This basket is reinforced using strips of split bamboo tightly laced over the mouth of the basket with bamboo straps through the top rim of the basket. In this way, the shape and make of the basket withstand heavy use and are preserved. Two pieces of split bamboos shall be crosswise attached onto the base for extra support and stability of the basket. Another unique feature of this basket is the tiny ring-like handle on the outer surface. The user can use this handle to carry the basket with ease. The Square Base Conical Basket is an excellent manifestation of the craft of the Kuki community in its craftsmanship and its economical utilization of natural materials, which inherently express their affinity to the soil and their culture.
