short description
The Splitted Bamboo Cane Basket is one of the many traditional handcrafted items of the Toda tribe, who reside in the Nilgiri Hills from south India. The Todo has a long history of craftsmanship and constructional techniques for making functional products out of natural raw materials, which this basket rather aptly reflects.
The basket is rounded and made of split bamboo and cane strips. The bamboo lends the required strength and flexibility, while the cane strips ensure much durability. The base is square, giving it strength and ensuring that it stands on the ground. The shape of the basket thus combining circular and square elements reflects the thoughtfulness of the Toda in terms of utility and the structure of a basket.

The base is square, giving it strength and ensuring that it stands on the ground. The shape of the basket thus combining circular and square elements reflects the thoughtfulness of the Toda in terms of utility and the structure of a basket.

The perimeter of the basket has a splitted cane piece that reinforces the rim, thereby supporting the opening of the basket and avoiding the deformation of the basket with time. Cane strips have thus been extended for use as the handles, carefully focusing on easy carrying. The handles are fixed on the side of basket and are user-friendly for transporting goods. This basket can be used for almost everything by the Toda people, for example, gathering and carrying food, keeping things, or just being handy in day-to-day life. The way this splitted bamboo cane basket is constructed brings simplicity and utility, thus making it a vital part of the cultural heritage and daily affairs of the tribe.
