Authentic Cane Strip Basket
description
The Split Cane Strips Basket is an authentic handicraft from the Khasi tribe-who are native to the Meghalaya region of northeast India. The weaving skills of the Khasi have attained great renown, while this very conical basket is ample proof of that skill.
The basket is made of split cane strips arranged quite loosely on a weaving pattern; therefore the basket holds flexibility and breathability. The loose weave of the basket not only makes it light but also gives it the necessary durability for carrying and storing various items. The rim of the basket is quite wide and reinforced by two twisted cane straps, which are wound around the rim for added strength and support. Even more support is given through another cane strip to reinforce the rim to permit a good and long life through rigorous use and handling.

The base of the basket is very narrow alongside with the body. Wooden pieces form the base, which are tied very tightly to the basket using cane strips. This design gives the basket stability to stand firmly on the ground, in case loaded with goods, without toppling over. The Khasi tribe members use the split-cane strips basket for various purposes like gathering food materials, storing household items, and carrying personal effects. It attests to the ingenuity of the tribe and its great skills in working with natural materials.
