short description
Bamboo tops are the best examples of Abor community craftsmanship in Arunachal Pradesh. The Abor are fine craftsmen who work with natural materials. He uses bamboo for most of his simple tools, toys, and utensils. This has illustrated the playful, creative ability of the tribe while blending form and function. The narrower end of the bamboo stick is carefully set into the wooden disc, thus providing a spindle over which the disc rotates to form the spinning surface. The stick is then pushed, causing the toy to spin. All these aspects are done very simply, reflecting some rudimentary understanding of mechanics and balancing by the tribesmen, thus offering diversion, as well as developing eye-hand coordination.

Bamboo Spinning Toy would have probably acted as a plaything for the children of the Abor community while serving to teach them the rudiments of motor action. The use of natural materials to make toys reflects the fact that the lives of such tribes are very sustainable, i.e. makes them sufficiently using the available resources for practical and recreative enjoyment. Now forming a part of the Indian Museum, Kolkata, the spinning toy showcases the artfulness of the Abor tribe and decodes their culture., reflecting their ability to create practical, functional, and sustainable tools for every work of life.
