The spherical basket with a square base is a legacy of the Naga tribes as much as a people, hailing from the northeastern region of India, especially Nagaland. The Naga people are a well-celebrated rich cultural heritage community, creating baskets for all practical and durable purposes to use locally available raw materials, mainly cane and bamboo. The shape of this medium-sized basket departs from the traditional round, spherical body, making it somehow unique in shape. The square base gives weight to the basket and ensures its secure standing on the ground. It is readily available for household use.

Naga employs these baskets to carry food items, store items in the household, and even gather agricultural produce from the field. To support the structure of the basket, its rim is reinforced with a split cane piece, which is tightly tied with cane straps. This technique gives the basket durability and preserves shape; it withstands the day-to-day usage. The split cane ensures that the basket is lightweight while remaining sturdy and functional. The round basket with a square base is one of the best examples of the Naga tribals to make and use a craft with practicality and artistry. This craft has been passed on from generation to generation, and each basket bears testimony to the weaver's skill as well as the cultural traditions of the Naga community.
