short description
In view of the interaction between tradition and culture, the Santhals find expression in their colorful culture through jewellery which is symbolic and functional. Among their traditional ornaments, the Santhal coin necklace is striking-an ornament showcasing the artisanal flair, resourcefulness, and an essence of continuity to heritage from the tribe's perspective. This phenomenal necklace comprises thirteen metallic coins, which slide freely on a cylindrical metallic hook. The whole assembly is strung together with a bark thread-natural fiber made from the bark of trees found in the forests around Santhal settlements. The use of bark thread speaks of the close affinity of the tribal peoples with nature and highlights the avenue whereby creativity allowed them to turn functional art from the resources around them.

Metallic coins recycled from old currency or pieces of scrap metal give the necklace its rustic charm. The soft chinking sound of the coins being displaced gently accompanies the movement; it thus becomes an element of sound associated with dances or rituals, bringing liveliness to the ceremonial attire. The simple design and rhythmic clink of the necklaces capture the attention and imagination in the Santhal sense of art. Traditionally, Santhal women wear such coin necklaces at festivals, rituals of agriculture, and weddings. Coins are imbued with personal and communal narratives that are past across generations. It is not just an ornament but a marker of cultural continuity and identity.
