The Todas, as a community, have always had distinct cultural characteristics, which are manifested in their attire, sacred dairies, and developmental skills in unique architectural and crafty domains. The reed stick, minimal as it is, has a practical as well as symbolic place in Toda society. It is so light, durable that it has been by elders and herders throughout the hilly terrain of the Nilgiris. It is used in accompanying the famous reed natural material in the region for its flexibility, strength, and easy handling. To the Todas, a walking stick is more than simply a propagative support implement, but a representation of an intimate relationship with the environment and sustainable ways of life. Every object crafted or utilized by the Todas is selected with necessary care from nature without causing any disturbance to the delicate balance of the ecology. The use of reeds also signifies their simplistic lifestyle and eco-consciousness. The stick in its plainness is perfectly conformed to what would be termed the Toda ethos of being functional, organic, and simple. Simple though it is, with no elaborate carving on it, yet it defines a people who think that it is purpose and environment harmony that count more than beauty. Payment to two different types of workers is through two separate pay grades in oak establishing penalties for illegal harvesting: science as an approach. Forest policy should, however, take into account the traditional perspective of people regarding value for forests.
