description
The wearing of this conical-shaped helmet, which was customly associated with the Naga tribe, testifies to the traditional craftsmanship with split cane and bamboo strips as primary materials. The base is oval for a snug fit on the head, while the matted frame is finely woven with strips on the inner surface for added strut.
An outer covering of the harvester red woven mat is tightly knitted cane strips, showcasing what the tribe can produce in terms of natural fiber artistry. One of its most glaring features is the arching cane structure, bent from one side to the other to form a raised ridge atop the helmet. Aside from its beauty, this element of design also captures the traditional characteristics regarding the status and identity represented in the community. Indigenous in the practice of rituals, ceremonies, and possibly used as warrior wear, this helmet is a very much closer inner reflection of the Naga people and their ways with nature using it to master and create such organic materials.
