This forcefully carved wooden board, rectangular in outline, speaks of the Maram Naga people's intricate artistry and symbolism. The board bears engraved motifs: the heads of mithuns (wild bovine), breasts, and teeth of enemies, each with deep cultural and spiritual meanings attached to it. The mithun is, by and large, worshipped by the tribes across Nagaland as a symbol of strength, prosperity, and harmony with nature. It commonly plays a part during different occasions like weddings and sacrifices.
The head of the mithun on the board serves to evoke honor towards that particular animal from the tribe which nurtures and supports livelihood in agricultural and social activities. In the same vein, breasts, less indirectly, are depicted to represent fertility, sustenance, and nurturance of life among the tribe. Teeth of the enemies in such Naga societies symbolize the conquest in the past, valor, and the tribals' warrior tradition. In the past, these symbols of strength and victory used to be displayed to intimidate, protect the community, and provide honor and recognition to the martial successes of their ancestors. However, over time, the artifacts have gradually evolved to serve an important purpose in the maintenance of the tribal history and identity. The carved wooden board stands for more than mere decoration; it embodies the Maram Naga tribe's philosophy of being valiant and a close relationship with nature.
