short description
The rectangular basket with shoulder straps is a traditional basket of the Dafla Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh that has found its way to the Indian Museum at Kolkata. This basket is a superbly woven product of split cane; it is lightweight, breathable, and very strong-weighing only a few kilos-less suitable for the hilly terrains of Northeast IndiaOne of the best features is that on one side, it has got these fairly long cane parts that serve the role of shoulder straps and further the ends of these cane parts insert coiled bark fibres for comfort and flexibility while trekking long distances or carrying heavy loads. The compact rectangular shape of the basket signifies that it was designed to carry essentials such as firewood or food or forest produce harvested.

To the Daflas, now more popularly known as Nyishis, such baskets were much more a utility accessory but were signifiers of self-sufficiency, utility of craftsmanship indeed inherited from generation to generation. The baskets symbolize a much more profound comprehension of the local environment and the sustainable use of natural resources like cane and bark. They now remain a silent testimony of the environment-friendly practice and skillful weaving tradition of tribal communities in Arunachal Pradesh.
