short description
It has been, within the Santhals, mostly confined to the state of Jharkhand. This is the art of weaving baskets powered by vine corrugated barks. The Santhals are one of the largest tribes in India, and the skill of Santhals themselves shines bright in the artifacts as well as in weaving and making baskets with diverse materials. Basket-making has the nature of an interplay in native lifestyle as well as wise utilization of native materials to construct it. The pot-shaped basket has a narrowed neck that imparts a striking but practical form to it; the construction of this basket body involves coiling strips of cane in a circular form, which is held by thin strips of cane to secure both shape and structure to the body. This coiling is also practical and decorative, giving rise to strength and durability to the basket.

An interesting element of this basket is the braided bark fiber string hung around the neck. Using bark fiber, preferably from trees in the forested areas of Jharkhand, gives a distinctive texture and aesthetic beauty. Apart from that, it serves the functional tightness of the constricted neck of the basket, making them more stable and firm. It is used by the Santhals for all feasible purposes, such as carrying food, collecting forest produce, etc., and for storing different things. This basket indeed preserves within it the invention of the Santhal tribe in its resource use. The craftsmanship has been passed down through generations of the tribe, which in turn safeguarded the cultural heritage of the tribe.
